Welcome to the Reception Year Page
Summer Term 2017
Welcome back after the Easter break, we hope that you have been enjoying the beautiful Spring weather and are ready to start the new term.
We are really excited to be having chicks delivered from Surrey Docks farm during the first week of term! Each class will be looking after some eggs until they have hatched chicks and we will learn how to look after the chicks.
We will be keeping chick diaries, using the internet and non-fiction books to find out more about chicks, and learning about the environment they grow up in.
We will also be learning about People Who Help Us, talking about the people we know within our community that help us and learning about how they help us. We will take a trip to a local fire station and visit a local farm to see how people help animals.
Spring Term 2017
We would like to welcome reception children back to the new term, we hope that you have all enjoyed a relaxing week long break.
Our focus this term will be Super storytelling!
We will be talking about our favourite super heroes, making super hero gadgets, creating our own super heroes and even dressing up as super heroes for World Book day!
We will be learning how to describe different super heroes and will think about how they stay safe. We will create our own tally charts to find out our favourite super heroes and will create a pictogram from the results.
We will also be learning about Traditional stories, creating story maps to tell a simple story and then adapting them to create our own stories! We will be thinking carefully about the characters in our stories and what makes a good story and then use cameras and ipads to record our stories.
We will also record our own stories through ‘Helicopter Stories’, and act them out to the rest of the class. We are really looking forward to hearing all your imaginative stories during our Super Story telling term!
Autumn Half Term 2016
Welcome to Reception! The children are settling in fantastically.
Our first topic this term is “All about Me” and has a personal, social and emotional development focus. We will be exploring our identities as belonging to Bears, Lions or Tigers class, our families and ourselves. As part of this we will be talking with the children individually about their families. We will also be creating an ‘I am, I can…’ booklet, which will include a variety of information about things the children can do. We will then revisit the book in the summer term to explore and celebrate all the new skills they have gained over the year.
I can skip! I can jump! I can hop!
Every week your child will have one-to-one time with a class adult to share a reading book on a specified day. We will put comments in a reading journal about their progress and what they like. Please try to read with your child every day if possible and put your own comments in the journal. The children will have the opportunity to comment as well by drawing pictures. Please keep the reading journal in their book bag and make sure to bring the book bag in on their reading day. They will also have the opportunity to choose a storybook from the class book corner to take home as often as they like.
In reception we teach phonics every day and follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonics programme. We start with Phase 1 and through a variety of activities including games and songs, we focus on listening skills, sound discrimination, as well initial sound recognition and oral blending. We will then move into Phase 2, introducing letter sounds, segmenting and blending.
