Welcome to Year 1!

Spring Term 2 2020

This half term we are learning about ‘Toys Now and Then’. We will be thinking about the toys our parents and grandparents played with, comparing them with what we like to play with. We will also be exploring the history of the teddy bear.

We will be reading a range of books featuring toys with particular focus on Traction Man and The Adventures of Egg Box Dragon.

In DT we will be designing and making our own teddy bears, working on our sewing skills. In Art we will explore the painting of Bruegel ‘Children’s games’, focusing on our sketching and observational skills.

In science we will be exploring the different parts of the plant and their roles. We will be conducting experiments to see what happens when you take away one of a plant’s essential needs: water, light or soil.

In maths we will be continuing to gain confidence counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Use this number square to paint all of the 2s, 5s and 10s numbers!

We will also be learning to use measurement vocabulary e.g. smaller, larger, longer, taller. We will be learning to use standard (cm) and non-standard (cubes) units for measuring.

Spring Term 2

This half term we are going to be learning about ‘Space’. We will be finding out about space travel and learning about Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake.

We will be reading a selection of fiction books about ‘Space’ including Beegu by Alexis Deacon, The Man on the Moon by Simon Bartram.

On Monday we heard a strange sound in our outdoor area. When we went outside to investigate we found these strange objects. Where could they have come from?

Autumn Term 2018

This term our topic is The Global Garden. We have read ‘The Curious Garden’ and have enjoyed creating our own curious gardens in class using different resources. We have been learning about the Kilmorie Quality ‘Curiosity’ and used our own curiosities to explore the wild garden and looked for things that we found interesting and wanted to find out more about.

We will also be reading ‘Handa’s Surprise and Anansi and the Turtle. We will be re-enacting stories, creating our own books and hot seating story characters.

Here are some useful links to the storys that we will be reading in class:

The Curious Garden:

Handa’s Surprise:

Anansi and The Turtle Go to Dinner:

Our maths focus this term will be to count, read and write numbers to 20 and addition and subtraction within 10. So far we have been using our number knowledge to create number lines indoors and outdoors, joining in with counting songs and creating numbers with chalk, water, bodies, tyres, crates and transient art.

This is the online reading scheme which allows your child access to hundreds of books at the click of a button. Your child can read them with you or when older & more confident, independently. Each book contains comprehension questions to boost reading skills. Points collected for completing the questions correctly can be used to play games. All of the books can be read to your child by the computer too.

Logins & passwords are held by your child’s teacher and have been sent home in a letter. Please encourage your child to access the website as often as possible.

If you have any problems with access at home, there is a trouble shooting guide held by Jennie on the school Reception desk.
