Welcome to Year 4

Autumn Term 2017


We hope you all had an enjoyable Summer Holiday.  The children have returned to school refreshed and ready to learn.  They have settled well into their new classrooms and have thrown themselves into the first project of the term: designing, making and tasting their Egyptian Elixir’s of Life.  Our history topic this term is Ancient Egypt.


Year 4 will read a number of texts related to their topic, both fiction and non-fiction with a focus on poetry from the story The Egyptian Cinderella.  The children will also explore the Myths in Marcia William’s book Tales of Gods and Pharaohs through a range of drama and writing activities, including writing their own myth.


In maths we will cover place value and written and mental methods of addition and subtraction. There will be a particular focus on learning multiplication and division facts and we would encourage the children to practise these regularly as part of their home learning.



Our Science topic is Animals Including Humans.  Year 4 will be learning the names of and functions of the parts of the digestive system in human and identifying the different types of teeth and their functions. We will be constructing and interpreting a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey.


In DT the children will design and make their own Egyptian purse.  In history we will be understanding where and when the Ancient Egyptian civilisation began and how this connects to other historical eras.  The children will also investigate a range of sources to aid their understanding of how Egyptian society was organized, their achievements and the causes for the decline of their civilization. Throughout the topic they will be noting connections, contrasts and trends over time with other historical topics they have studied. In RE we will be learning about places of Christian worship. In French we will be revising colour and learning parts of the body


Please help your child to remember to bring the correct kit to school on the following days:

Sarah’s Class: Dance on Wednesdays, Swimming on Fridays

Kassi’s Class: Swimming on Wednesdays, Outdoor PE – Cricket on Fridays

Hannah’s Class: Indoor PE –Dance on Wednesdays, Outdoor PE – Cricket on Fridays

Dominic’s Class: Indoor PE –Yoga on Tuesdays, Outdoor PE – Cricket on Wednesdays

KIT REQUIRED:  Indoor PE – shorts or leggings, T-shirt.  Swimming – Costume, swimming hat and towel.  Outdoor PE – jogging bottoms, T-shirt, long-sleeved top (in colder weather), trainers or plimsolls.

As the children are not allowed to wear jewellery during PE, we would ask that they do not wear jewellery to school on those days. Please ensure all long hair is tied back for health and safety reasons. We will assume that the children are able to join in PE activities unless we have a letter to the contrary.

Homework is sent home on Thursdays and should be completed and returned by the following Monday if you would like it to be marked. The children will be taking a book home each week and should be responding to their reading in their reading journals. If you have any queries about your homework, please ask for help before the weekend.

Bug Club

This is the online reading scheme which allows your child access to hundreds of books at the click of a button. Your child can read them with you or when older & more confident, independently. Each book contains comprehension questions to boost reading skills. Points collected for completing the questions correctly can be used to play games. All of the books can be read to your child by the computer too.

Logins & passwords are held by your child’s teacher and have been sent home in a letter. Please encourage your child to access the website as often as possible.
