Kilmorie Primary School Newsletter - 14th February 2025

Friday 14th February 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a short but packed term.  We have had plenty of workshops, visits, themed weeks and activities.  It is time for a week’s rest.  On Monday my assembly was based on this week’s focus – Online Safety.  I spoke to the children about possible scams while going online.

On Wednesday we welcomed Mayor. Brenda Dacres, the Mayor of Lewisham.  It was a privilege to give her a tour of the school and speak to her about the wonderful things we do at Kilmorie as well as the challenges that we face.  She met with members of The Pupil Parliament, who told her about their role but also asked her questions about her position.  Brenda is the first black woman to win a directly elected mayoral role.  We look forward to welcoming her back soon.

Educational Visits

Year 6 had a fabulous trip to the Science Museum on Tuesday where we spent the morning exploring the free galleries (favourites were the Medicine Gallery and the interactive Who Am I? Exhibits). In the afternoon, we all enjoyed our time in the Wonderlab Gallery, which is packed with interactive exhibits and immersive experiences. The class were all enthused by the opportunities to explore scientific phenomena and their behaviour was excellent, both in the museum and on the journey to and from the museum. Penny, the team and the children are very grateful to all the parents and Alessandra who accompanied us; without them, we could not have gone ahead with the visit.

A few weeks ago, I sent out a link to a parental questionnaire.  Thank you to the parents who responded, but we only had 27 replies.  It would be great if more parents could contribute their views so that we can get a clearer picture of the school communities views.

I have restarted the survey and here is the link.  It will close on the 28th February.

Gardening News from Eva -

"The new hornbeam hedge is growing well, the children have been looking after the plants, and we are waiting for the new green leaves to arrive.  So far in the gardens we have spotted a snowdrop and primrose flower, and we are seeing the daffodils and tulips starting to push through the earth.  The Year 2 children have been planting bulbs and learning about seeds through the plants in our gardens.

Year 4 have learnt about how the new hedge will increase animal diversity in the gardens and help to keep pollution out of our playground.  We will have our first gardening day of the year in March when hopefully the spring flowers will be blooming."

SEND

Coffee Morning for those families who want to know more about Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Dear parents/carers,

Thank you to those who made it to the coffee morning where Sophie from Drumbeat shared information on talking to children about neurodiversity. Some helpful information is being shared in the SEND WhatsApp group or if requested, I can send it on by email.

With plenty of notice, the next coffee morning is scheduled for Tuesday 1st April at 9.15 in the library. The theme will be on using visuals at home to help combat stress and anxiety and promote successful independence, useful even if your child is very capable of using spoken language.

Community Allies

The Kilmorie Community Allies have put together a brief survey for families at Kilmorie Primary School regarding their perceptions and practices related to race equity and anti-racism.

The Allies were set up earlier this year to help create a supporting, inclusive environment in our school for families and children who belong to the global majority. The survey below is for us to get a better understanding of which activities to prioritise to support the school in becoming an anti-racist community. It should take 5-10 minutes to complete.

All responses will be kept anonymous. If you have any questions about this research, please contact Amanda Aldercotte (the research lead for the Allies) at mandyaldercotte@hotmail.com.
