Kilmorie Primary School Newsletter - 4th April 2025

Friday 4th April 2025

Dear all,

I am sure that you read Anita’s, the Chair of Governors, letter yesterday.  I have the privilege of being the substantive headteacher at Kilmorie Primary School, and I am delighted to lead such a wonderful school community. I was touched to receive so much support both before and after the recruitment process and I would like to say thank you to you all.

However, my role and focus has not changed, as my team and I are focused on delivering the best possible school experience for all our young people.  I am excited to continue our journey.

We have had a packed week.  We have had several educational visits.  The Year 1s had a visit from the Wonderdome, Year 3 visited the Barbican to watch the London Symphonic Orchestra and Year 5 concluded their visits to Mudshute Farm.

I hope that our Muslim community had a wonderful Eid celebration as Ramadan came to an end last weekend.

Our assembly this week was led by Nicola and the children were treated to a performance from our very talented school band!

On Friday, Jo's class performed their assembly all about the Vikings. They explained that although the Vikings were seen as ferocious warriors, most of them were just normal people. They also dispelled the myth that Viking helmets all have horns.  They explained how there were several contenders for the throne when Edward the Confessor died, culminating in the Battle of Hastings.   Finally, they told the audience all about how evidence of the Vikings in Britain all around us in place names and everyday language is still. This was all done via a brilliant all-singing, all -dancing (or battling) performance.  Well done to all the children for a fabulous assembly!

May I wish you a wonderful break, I hope that the weather holds for us.  Happy Easter.

Dennis

The Vikings are coming!

News from the Wellbeing Committee - The Wellbeing Pupil Parliament Committee have been encouraging every class to do as many daily miles as they can every week and have been keeping a record of how many their class has done.  Congratulations to Sarah R's year 4 class who have completed the most daily miles this term with a staggering total of 36!  As a reward for their efforts the whole class will get some special Tully time in the summer term.

Thank you to everyone who attended the book fair. This was the first time in many years that we held a scholastic book fair at Kilmorie and thanks to your support and generosity we managed to raise £921.53 which will be used to purchase books for the newly opened library.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our library volunteer team (Kirstie, Sarah, Rina and Anita) for dedicating their time after school to help run the event.

Although this was a successful event, unfortunately there were some teething issues and some concerns. On the first day of the fair there were problems with processing payments, and we apologise if you experienced this. After this was reported to scholastics, it was immediately resolved. We also understand that some of the books were expensive and while there were some discounted books, we feel these were not enough. We have given scholastics some feedback and asked if we were to choose to use them for a future event, then we would need a bigger selection of popular books at a discounted rate.

Image result for Garden Sign Clip ArtWe would like to invite the whole school community, with family and friends, to visit the school for an Open Garden on Sunday 27th April from 12pm to 2pm.

Please feel free to bring a picnic with you. There will be some refreshments to buy at the event and a plant sale. FOK will be helping with refreshments and will be asking for cake donations nearer the time.

You can build dens in the Wild Garden with your children, take a tour of the different garden areas or learn about the history of the gardens with photos from the past.  All welcome, come and see the plants grown with the help of parents/carers, children and teachers.

The gardens belong to us all, and we're hoping the weather will be kind and the plants will be doing what they do naturally.

SEND Coffee Morning

On Tuesday morning we had a very informative session on using visual support strategies. Parents learnt how we use them in school and how they can be used at home to support children’s understanding and emotional regulation. We have a link here to the school website where the PowerPoint is saved under the ‘Inclusion’ section.  A big thank you to our Drumbeat partners for leading this session.

We hope that many more of you will be able to join us in the future.

Smartphones

A date for your diary.  We will be hosting a Smartphone Free School Workshop on Friday 9th May at 09.10.

If you were planning to buy a smartphone for your child please read the article in the Online Newsletter.   Image result for smartphone cartoon

As I have said in previous newsletters that we are planning to ban pupils bringing smartphones into school.  I would like this to happen over the next term. If you are looking to buy your child a phone over the coming months, for their walk to and from school, look to provide a basic mobile phone and not a smartphone.
