Kilmorie Primary School Newsletter - 24th October 2025

{item_alt_tag}

Friday 24th October 2025

As we reach the end of this first half-term, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on what a vibrant and activity-filled few weeks it has been. Firstly, we hope that all those who celebrated Diwali had a joyful and meaningful time with loved ones.

It has been a pleasure to welcome our new Reception, Nursery, and other new joiners to the Kilmorie community. Seeing the children settle in, make new friends, and begin their learning journeys has been truly heartwarming.

This week, our Year 6 children have been enjoying their PGL adventure, taking part in a wide range of exciting outdoor activities and building wonderful memories together. Meanwhile, those Year 6s who remained at school have had some unique experiences of their own, including a fun trip to bowling and a taste of “work experience”—a fantastic opportunity to explore responsibility and teamwork in new ways.

In our Monday assembly, I shared an excerpt from Coming to England by Floella Benjamin, a powerful story that celebrates resilience, identity, and the importance of belonging—values we hold dear at Kilmorie.

We wish all our families a restful and enjoyable half-term break, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back in a week’s time, refreshed and ready for the new term.  Thank you for your continued support.

Update on Senior Leadership (SLT) Roles
This year, we’ve made a small change to the structure of our Senior Leadership Team (SLT). Rather than having an Assistant Head assigned to each phase, our leaders now have oversight across all year groups, each with a specific area of focus such as inclusion, curriculum, assessment, educational visits etc. This change is designed to strengthen the SLT’s understanding of the whole school and ensure a more cohesive approach to leadership.

If you have any queries, start by speaking with your class teacher first – they are your first point of contact. If the query remains, contact both Assistant Headteachers (Maria and Martha). For matters related to Inclusion and SEND, please email our SENCO. If needed, you may also email the Headteacher directly. You can email the school via info@kilmorie.lewisham.sch.uk, and the office will direct your message to the appropriate member of staff. Alternatively, feel free to speak to any member of the SLT, who will be happy to help or point you in the right direction.

Creating a RRSA network in your area - Rights Respecting Schools Award

RRSA Updates

During Kate’s RRSA assembly on Tuesday, she shared some of the work and activities done by each year group for Black History Month to raise further awareness of Articles 2 (no discrimination) and 30 (minority culture).

She also focused on two local sports people – Joe Gomez and Dina Asher-Smith  - to highlight the achievements of Black individuals from South London and encourage the children to find inspiration and positive role models in diverse fields and from our local community.  These are conversations we will continue to have in the classroom. We will be creating a display of our Black History Month projects and look forward to sharing this with you next term.

The newly elected Pupil Parliament members met for the first time on Wednesday.  They were also joined by members of the Rights Respecting Steering Group.  We have now also included a representative from each year 1 class in the Rights Respecting Group.  We introduced the committees and briefly outlined what their roles and responsibilities would be for the year.  We also gave them ideas for projects and initiatives they could get involved in throughout the year and emphasised that the ideas and work should be mostly child-led.  We asked the children to think about the CRC Article that is best aligned with their committee and how they can promote these articles throughout the year.

Ashdown Primary School - Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL)

As we continue to collect resources for our OPAL programme – as in previous newsletters, some parents have asked me about OPAL – What is it?  Home - Outdoor Play and Learning  If you click the link it will take you to the website.  We are hoping to introduce more activities to the playground over the next half-term to enrich playtime experiences.  We will be asking the Friends of Kilmorie to help us purchase items that we cannot get through donations.

Romans

Last week, Year 4 took part in a drama workshop all about the Romans.  The workshop looked at the everyday life of Romans, their diet and clothes and how they were not all able to go to school (shocking!), as well as the organisation of the Roman army, the battle with the Celts led by Boudicca and how, even now, we have local evidence of their road systems!  Everyone had lots of fun and learnt lots of exciting facts about the Romans.

Class Assembly

Today Vicky’s class gave us a wonderful assembly on Roman Britain.   They outlined well the origins of the Roman Republic and Empire, and particularly the Roman Invasion of Britain.  The assembly was a mix of violence, comedy and singing.  I will not be using decimation as a form of behaviour management!

                                                  Well done,Vicky’s class.

Athletics Success at the Minithon!

Last Saturday, Rupert (Year 3, Crystal’s class) and Andre (Year 4, Eleni’s class) proudly represented their athletics club, S Factor Academy, at the Minithon athletics competition, which brought together over 350 young athletes from across London and the South East.

Both boys performed brilliantly in their individual events—60m, 200m, and 600m races—achieving impressive results and showcasing great determination and skill. A special congratulations to Rupert, who placed 2nd overall in the Year 3 boys’ competition—a fantastic achievement!

Well done to both Rupert and Andre!
