Kilmorie Primary School Newsletter - 30th January 2025

Friday 30th January 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been another wonderfully busy week at Kilmorie. Year 1 have been out exploring the Wildcat Wilderness, Year 6 immersed themselves in the world of Ancient Greece through engaging workshops, and Reception children brought great energy to their Dance Workshops. Our week began with my assembly on “Graffiti” — exploring its ancient origins, questions of legality, and its place as an artform. On Tuesday, for Holocaust Memorial Day, I continued last week’s reflection by focusing on Anne Frank, her life and the enduring power of her legacy. This half‑term is certainly moving at pace, and it has been fantastic to see such rich learning experiences unfolding across the school.

Today we enjoyed Isla’s class assembly.  The children took us through an exploration of space.

I had a wonderful time in Poppy’s class talking about the skull and how it protects the brain.  I demonstrated using a glass jar and eggs.  It did remind me however of road safety.  It is great to see so many children ride their bikes to school; however, I do see many children without helmets.  If your child does ride their bike to school, please provide them with a helmet.

Children’s Mental Health Week

Children’s Mental Health Week will be taking place from 9th to 15th February and the theme this year is ‘This is my Place’.  We will be focusing on how we can help the children feel like they belong and discussing why belonging matters for mental health.  The children will be taking part in activities to explore this theme throughout the week and Friday, 13th February will be ‘Come as Yourself Day’.  The children can wear an outfit which makes them feel most comfortable, confident, and like they truly belong — whether that’s cosy clothes, cultural dress, favourite colours or something totally unique. We will share more details of our plans for the week in next week’s newsletter and will also share activities to try at home to build on the feeling of belonging.

Year 6 Workshop

This Wednesday, Year 6 were very lucky to take part in a drama workshop run by Mark Stevenson (actor and ex-Kilmorie parent) to enhance our learning their learning on our Ancient Greece topic.  The children stepped into a time machine and journeyed back over 2,500 years to the land of mighty gods, brave heroes, and brilliant thinkers! During the engaging workshop, children became young historians on a mission to uncover the secrets of Ancient Greece.

A huge thanks to Mark for sharing his vast knowledge of Ancient Greek history and planning a range of activities that kept everyone focused on learning and to Rachel for organising this opportunity for the whole year group.

Catering

I have received many messages over the last few months (and years) about the catering at Kilmorie and the quality and choice of the food provided.   I have been in contact with the caterers to improve the provision  Today a selection of children tasted food from the new menu.  Chartwell’s would also like to offer a tasting session for parents after half-term.  When I have a date, I will let you know, so you taste for yourself the food being delivered.

Shrek!

There is a wonderful buzz around the school regarding our auditions.  We have had an amazing 229 children sign up to audition. We have 30 speaking parts this year and there will be around 35-40 nonspeaking roles. Any role given is crucial to a successful performance no matter how many lines a character has, and with every group singing from year 1 to year 6 everyone is a part of the show and is equally important. We would love to give everyone a part, but this just isn't feasible. We would appreciate your support in managing the children's expectations.

To celebrate the launch of our new production, here are the links to the Peter Pan performances. We are sorry that this has taken a while to get to you all but enjoy they all did a wonderful job! Please note that the link will only be available to download until the 6.02.2026.
