School Holidays | Day Out With The KidsIt has been a very busy term at Kilmorie, and it is hard to believe that we have already reached the half-term break.

As always, the weeks have been packed with learning, enrichment and opportunities for our children to broaden their understanding of the world around them.

This week began with my assembly celebrating two Lewisham artists who have achieved international success: Maxi Priest and Mica Paris. As part of the assembly, we also explored some of the rich history of our school building and its connections with the local community. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn more about the achievements of people with strong roots in our borough and to reflect on the importance of ambition, resilience and pride in our community.

Our Black History Month celebrations continued throughout the week with a range of engaging workshops, including Anansi and African Stories and Her Story. The children thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and gained valuable insights through storytelling, discussion and shared learning experiences. It has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm and curiosity from the children as they continue to deepen their understanding of Black history, culture and achievement.

I also met with Governors on two occasions this week. The first meeting focused on the development of our school vision. This is an important piece of work, and we look forward to sharing our thinking and collaborating with all stakeholders as the term progresses. The second meeting was with the Finance and Resources Committee, where we were in strong agreement about the importance of continuing to invest in anti-racism training for our school community. This reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that Kilmorie is a welcoming, inclusive and equitable environment for all.

We were also delighted to welcome back our Year 6 children who attended the PGL residential this week. I hope they had a fantastic time, challenged themselves, made lasting memories and enjoyed the many exciting activities on offer. We look forward to hearing all about their adventures and experiences over the coming weeks. A huge thank you must also go to the staff who gave up their time to accompany the children and make the visit possible. Your commitment is greatly appreciated. I hope you had fun too and, perhaps most importantly, managed to get some sleep!

As we reach the end of the half term, I would like to thank you for your continued support. I hope that all of our families enjoy a restful and enjoyable break. After the holiday, we will begin looking ahead to our Winter Fair and the many Christmas festivities that make this time of year so special within our school community.

Finally, please remember that Monday 2nd November is an INSET Day, and the school will be closed to pupils.

Thank you, as always, for your support, and I look forward to welcoming everyone back after the break.

Have a great weekend.

Capricornone Pupil Parliament School Shield Badge

A reminder about the forthcoming Pupil Parliament elections.  We are working towards the Gold Award for Rights Respecting Schools, and pupils need to take the lead in this work.  The Pupil Parliament is a good way for your child to participate in this work.

Next term, every Y2 -Y6 class will elect Pupil Parliament members to represent them this year.  Pupil Parliament meetings will be facilitated by a staff member and will meet regularly to discuss how improvements can be made in areas like our school environment, recycling, behaviour and to support us on our Rights Respecting journey. The aims are:

  1. To give children an opportunity to understand and participate in a democratic process.

  1. To Support children to understand their rights and responsibilities.

  1. To help the people who make decisions in the school understand and respect children’s points of view.

  1. To give children a say in how they learn and how to improve the learning environment within the school.

  1. To feedback on discussions and actions to their classes.

  1. To action decisions that have been made or explain why they can't happen.

Pupils with SEND will be invited to attend meetings and have a say in the matters raised.

Each class will have 2 representatives: a Leader and a Vice Leader and they will work together to represent their class.  The Rights Respecting Steering Group members will stay the same as last year to ensure continuity but we will be inviting additional children to join the group from across the school.

Your child can choose to run for both Leader and Vice Leader. They will need to prepare a short speech saying why they would like to run for the post, what improvements/changes they would like to see at Kilmorie, what strengths they will bring to the group.

In our Rights Respecting Assembly, we will explore Article 12:  Respect for the views of the child and discuss why it is important to share their views and opinions on matters that affect them.  Pupil Parliament gives children the opportunity to speak up and make a difference.  During the week of 2nd November, we will be holding elections in class. This is when your child will share their speech and the class will vote.  Please support your child to prepare for the election process, if they would like to put themselves forward.

Thank you,

Elis and Kate

A Fun-Filled Festival for all the Family

Join us at IWM London this October and celebrate the art of storytelling.

Discover the power of stories through free drop-in activities, or purchase tickets to talks with bestselling children's authors like Judith Eagle and Tom Palmer. Older children can learn about the craft of storytelling through words and art with talks and workshops with Sarah Gavron and Sophie Herxheimer.

Take part in free illustration workshops with Will Hughes and learn how to turn your imagination into drawings, or join a family knees-up with musician Tom Carradine, who'll be performing 1940's classics for families of all ages.

Younger visitors can take part in free activity sessions, or your family can book a guided tour of IWM's Galleries, discovering the incredible stories behind the objects on display.

Throughout both days, you 'll be able to meet some of your favourite authors at IWM's bookshop, have a chat and get your book copy signed! See the schedule here.

The festival's themes are inspired by IWM’s major exhibition, Childhood in War  (open until 28 February 2027), the UK’s first exhibition dedicated to the impact of conflict on young people from the First World War to today.

Please note: Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult (16+) at all times. Adults must hold a ticket for paid activities.
