Dear Parents and Carers,

This is a bumper newsletter with lots to share, as well as important information and reminders. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read it.

This week, the whole school assembly was led by Martha for Lower Phase and Maria for Upper Phase. The assembly was based around Refugee Week which takes place from the 17th to the 24th June. During the assembly, they discussed the definitions of ‘refuge’ and ‘refugee’ and read a story called ‘Adnan’ by Mark Arrigo and Steven Chatterton which tells the story of a refugee boy and his mother. They then talked about the theme of this year which is ‘home’ and discussed what home means to us, ending by looking at ways we can make people feel welcome when they are not feeling ‘at home’.

We have had lots of visits again this week which are all in the school news section with pictures and quotes from the children – do take a look. These visits are an important part of enriching learning.

I do, however, want to do a special mention about our year 5&6 Girls’ Football team. They had the finals cup competition this week and it was heartwarming to speak with Jane as she was so overwhelmed with the girls – they not only showed all of the Kilmorie qualities, they shone through – what a credit to our school, do please have a read.

Today we had a fabulous class assembly from Conor’s class. They shared with us all the grisly things they have learnt around their topic, Crime and Punishment. They shared examples in the form of a talent show!! It was a fun approach, but it confirmed that I am glad we live in the current times! Well done Conor’s class it was a most enjoyable class assembly.

If you have been into the main school reception over the last few days, you may have noticed our wonderful Gratitude Tree. A few weeks ago, all the children from years 2-6 wrote, on a paper leaf, something that they were grateful for in school. The session was led by Nicola and Shivani and the children gave a wide range of answers. Reena has once again shown her artistic talents and created a huge, colourful tree on which to place these “grateful leaves.” A huge thank you to Reena, Nicola and Shivani, as well as our many children, who helped cut the leaves out, for such a visually impressive feature for our hallway!

Outstanding Payments: Please can we ask that any outstanding instrumental and enrichment fees on your ParentPay account are paid, and your account is kept up to date.

Apologies for any errors with the autumn and spring term wrap around care balances, this was due to us not reconciling the voucher payments. I believe this has now been done and accounts updated accordingly. There are several accounts still owing the school money for this time period. An email has been sent where relevant. Please can these be paid ASAP.

Imani and Minh will be chasing arrears in the next few weeks. If you are struggling to pay the outstanding balance, do please come and speak to myself or Dennis and we can look into a payment plan.

For any queries regarding instrumental fees please email accounts@kilmorie.lewisham.sch.uk

For any queries regarding enrichment fees please email enrichment@kilmorie.lewisham.sch.uk

For any queries regarding wrap around care fees please email wrap@kilmorie.lewisham.sch.uk

Reminders:

  • The school photographer is in on Monday 17th June & Tuesday 18th June to do the class photos.

  • Sports Day is on Wednesday 19th at Catford Cyphers Cricket Club. Please let the office know if you can help with walking down to the field or back to school by emailing info@kilmorie.lewisham.sch.uk. Follow this link for the letter for information about the day. Children will be allowed to go home at the end of Sports Day. You must let the teacher know so they can be signed off the register. Please ensure all alternative collection arrangements (eg, planning on taking someone else's child home) are communicated as soon as possible as it is difficult for the office to get messages to the teachers on the day.

  • Please can you end any calls before coming onto the school grounds and if your child brings a phone to school, remind them that their phones should also be switched off and put away out of sight as they enter the school premises.

Summer Holiday Play Scheme: A letter has been sent out to the parents of children that already attend wrap regarding the summer play scheme. Wrap parents have priority and to secure a place need to sign their children up on Arbor. From Monday 17th June, summer play scheme will be available to book for the rest of the school. Payments will be via parent pay

Tully Update
In the past 2 weeks, a group of children from each year 2 class have been reading to Tully once a week.  This will help them develop their reading skills and build their confidence to read aloud in a smaller group to a non-judgmental listener!  Jayne has been leading this and children from the other year groups will have the opportunity to do this from September onwards.  One of the children said, 'It made me excited because I got to read to a dog, and I've never done that'.  Another child said, 'I was nervous at first, but then I was happy'.

Wishing all our families a lovely weekend and I look forward to welcoming you all back on Monday to another action-packed week.

Kind regards

Julie

FOK SummerFair

We are excited to add a new feature to this years summer fair. Some children in Years 5 &6 requested a Bubble tea stall so we have added this as a trial. Fingers crossed it’s a success and we can make it a permanent feature.

There are still around 40 slots left to fill, we particularly need helpers between the hours of 1 and 2. Please can you sign up to give just one hour of your time so that we can all enjoy the fair in its entirety.  See below for the link.

And finally, dont forget to donate bottles for our Tombola. Bottles can be put in the blue bin.

School News

Year 1 had a very interesting visit to St George’s Church as part of their Christianity topic in RE. They learned about different parts of church buildings, the meaning of the colours worn in church and different ceremonies that take place at the church. They asked the reverend lots of questions and then explored the church.

This week and last, all the year 5 classes visited the Royal Courts of Justice to reenact a previous court case inside a court room. Each child had role to play from the judge, the barristers and solicitors to the defendant, victim, witnesses and the jury. The case was about cyberbullying, which linked to our Crime and Punishment topic as well as our PSHE learning. There will be photos on the website soon.

All the year 4 classes have enjoyed a trip to the Horniman Museum. They attended a workshop about classification where they got to touch and classify lots of specimens. They also visited the aquarium where they found Nemo and Dory! They then spent the afternoon exploring the gardens and enjoying being outside.

Hana: "I liked how we got to feel all the animals."

Arthur: "I liked touching the wobbly jellyfish."

Myles: "I liked how we got to look through the microscope and guess what we were looking at."

Conor and Jana’s class both went on their trip to Gurudwara as part of their RE topic on Skihism, the children had a workshop on Sikhi (the Sikhway of life) and enjoyed their time just as much as Shipra’s class did last week.

Year 5 fire brigade visit Fire Brigade officers came to talk about all things fire safety. The children found out why all homes should have smoke detectors and what to do if there is a fire in their home.

LAMDA Enrichment Club: On Tuesday 18th June and Thursday 20th June there will be a LAMDA showcase starting from 15:45 - 16:30.

Please come and watch the children perform.

Some of our Year 5 and 6 girls participated in a Girl's World Cup Tournament, this week, at AFC Lewisham.

It was such a lovely day filled with great football and even the weather held out for us too!

When we arrived we were told that we would be playing all teams and the girls were so excited. The tournament went so well, we only concededed 3 goals the entire tournament thanks to great goalkeeping from Scarlett. All day the girls showed great sportsmanship and empathy towards each team by shaking hands with all children involved and their coaches. The girls even decided to take one of their goals as disallowed due to the other keeper having an injury to the face. There was some dramatic runs and finishes, great goals and plenty of cheering. After a tiring 11 games and all that excitement the girls ended up finishing 6th place out of 12, which is such a great achievement.

We are so proud of all children that have been involved in these events over the year and it really does show by the level of determination and sportsmanship followed by showing all the Kilmorie qualities the children have at Kilmorie.

Year 4 took part in a cricket tournament last Thursday against local schools. We spent the day in Mayow Park and played against lots of different teams.

One of our teams came 4th out of 30 teams!

We had lots of fun and it was great to cheer each other on!
