Sarah R's Class went on a trip to Creekside Discovery Centre to introduce their new topic, Rivers. The children were introduced to some topic words about rivers. They then had the opportunity to go and look at the river, creating sketches and labelling the features. In groups, they looked at some artefacts that had been discovered in the Thames and used these to think about the industries that used to be near the rivers, like blacksmiths, potters and boatyards. After lunch, the children took part in a low tide river walk in Deptford Creek. They even did a science experiment to try and calculate the velocity of the river, using rubber ducks. The highlight for most of the children was the river dipping, where they found freshwater leeches, freshwater hog lice, Chinese Mitten crab, shrimp and a rare baby European Eel.
