Friday 20th June 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been hot this week. We kindly remind all families to ensure children are well-prepared for the hot weather—please send them in with sun hats, water bottles, and apply sunscreen before school.

This week has been full of enriching experiences and learning across the school. Monday’s assembly marked the start of Refugee Week, where we reflected on the journeys and resilience of displaced people around the world. We concluded the week with Years 2-6 walking around the school playground quietly.   It was a wonderful, powerful morning.  Thank you, Kate, for organising it.  We shall do it again next year.  Community is a superpower!  There is more information below.

Our pupils have also taken part in a variety of educational visits, including trips to local Mosques and Buddhist Centres, deepening their understanding of different cultures and faiths. Despite the soaring temperatures, our Reception Sports Day was a great success—full of smiles, teamwork, and plenty of water breaks!

A parent kindly brought to my attention the attempted abduction of a Year 7 child near Honor Oak Park on Wednesday.  I believe someone was arrested yesterday. However, it is a good opportunity for us all to remind children about how to stay safe when walking independently.  I have instructed teachers in Years 5 and 6 to talk to their classes about this topic.

Please remember that the last day of term, 18th July and will be a 2pm finish.

Rachel’s class assembly

Yesterday we enjoyed Rachel’s class run through Crime and Punishment through the ages.  Both informative and amusing and one of the children did a good job of playing me, albeit with hair!  The assembly was certainly thought-provoking about how `justice` has changed throughout the ages.

RRS / Refugee Week  20/06/2025

To mark World Refugee Day today and the end of Refugee Week, children and adults gathered in the playground for a ‘Walk a Mile in my Shoes’ silent walk around the playground. To raise awareness of refugees, children have been learning about Articles 10 and 22 of the UNCRC this month and participating in discussions and activities linked to this topic.

The walk was an opportunity for us all to pause and reflect on some of the experiences that refugees in our community and around the world face.  We are also collecting items for a local refugee charity and there will be collection points in classrooms and at reception next week if you are able to donate any non-perishable items or essential non-food items like hygiene products or baby supplies.  Kate will coordinate this with the help of the Rights Respecting Steering Group children.  Thank you in advance for your support.

Milford School - Educational Visits and School Activities

Jo’s class

Jo's Class visited the Science Museum on Friday.  It was a fantastic visit and everyone thoroughly enjoyed all the hands-on activities including flying helicopters, using pulleys to lift ourselves and even making rings of smoke!  We saw an amazing Chemistry demonstration where we discovered how a combination of magnets and a superconductor can enable levitation and watched an amazing show where we saw how chemicals can react to form glowing liquids and the effect of sound vibrations using flames!  We all felt very inspired.

Crystal’s class

This week, Crystal's Class visited the Kagyu Samye Dzong London Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Centre for a thoughtful and enriching experience. The session was led by a Tibetan nun who lives onsite at the centre and offered students a unique insight into Buddhist life and practice. We revisited the story of Siddhartha Gautama, explored the core teachings of the Buddha, and reflected on the values of compassion, mindfulness, and inner peace. The peaceful surroundings and guided meditation helped bring these teachings to life in a memorable and meaningful way.

Penny’s class.

Penny’s class went on a really great trip to the Lewisham Islamic Centre on Thursday morning. The Imam spoke to us for 45 minutes about the Islamic faith and what was important to Muslims. He related everything to topics the children could relate to such as football and revising for SATS.  The children were very respectful and they impressed all the adults with the insightful comments they made. As always, we are very grateful to the parents who volunteered to accompany us without whom we couldn’t have gone ahead with the visit,

And Penny was very happy that the class unanimously agreed that teachers were more important than footballers. High praise indeed from such a football obsessed class!

Please don't forget to get your tickets for Peter Pan, they're selling fast, it would be amazing for the children to have a full house!

Olive - for her amazing learning behaviour. Olive has consistently chosen to speak to her peers with kindness and respect.

Ada - for her amazing work during History this week.

Deia - Has made amazing progress with her reading.

Kate (Year 2)

Evelyn for the progress she has made in the summer term, in her learning and at playtimes.  I am especially impressed with her writing now, her independent retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk shows how it is all coming together for her now and showcased lots of the skills we have been learning all year.

Felix is a child I could have celebrated from the very first week of year 2 and every week after that.  He demonstrates all of the Kilmorie qualities every day and is a joy to have around.  Thanks for everything you have done throughout the year Felix for all of us and for being able to do it all with a smile on your face.

I am celebrating Alexis P because she has worked so hard throughout the year, even when she has found the work challenging, she has persevered and now we are now seeing all of that hard work pay off.  Thanks for not giving up when you found things tricky and well done on all the progress you have made.  We are very proud of you.

Robyn – I loved reading your fantastic Museum sleepover story!

Hettie - for her excellent attitude to her learning, consistently doing her best.  Also for being a great learning partner, even when she may find it difficult.

Sarah R (Year  4)

Teddy - For his resilience with his learning. If he has found something challenging, then he goes home and practices. He is always trying to produce his best work and is keen to get feedback.

Ivayla - For her independence which has really developed this year, enabling her to make progress. If she is unsure then she will ask for help and then get on with her work.

Harvey and Izzi for the progress they have made in their writing this year and for them fulfilling their potential in this area.

Last week:

Community Allies

Allies Noticeboard Launches for Refugee Week!

We’re excited to share that our Allies Noticeboard has officially launched—just in time to mark Refugee Week.

This vibrant new space is dedicated to celebrating cultural events, traditions and the rich diversity within our school community.

The artwork has been created by the Allies Art Club, which has got off to a fantastic start with two groups of 24 children from Years 1 to 6 taking part last term.

To begin, the children have been exploring the theme ‘All Different, All Beautiful’—a powerful project that celebrates individuality and difference through self-portraits.

Children have also created rosettes to honour the first Olympic Refugee Team, using art to explore themes of resilience, belonging and global community.

The children’s work is now proudly displayed—please do take a moment to stop by the ground floor corridor and see the creativity and care they’ve put into this project.

Thank you

Nadine, Lucy, Sheetal and Kei

(on behalf of the Community Allies)

Pride Picnic, Friday 4 July, 3.30pm – 7pm

To celebrate the inclusivity and love that Pride represents, and support London Pride (taking place on 5 July), we’re holding a relaxed social evening in the school playground on Friday 4 July. Bring a picnic, a blanket and the whole family - the kids can play, do crafts or get their face painted, and you can chat with fellow parents and carers. Read more here

Carnival of Culture, Saturday 12 July, 12 – 3pm

We’re really excited about this one! We’re celebrating our magnificent community and all the cultures that make us so special at our summer event – the Carnival of Culture. We believe that learning about, understanding and appreciating different cultures makes us kinder, more thoughtful human beings all round. So, we’re bringing to bring lots of activities together in one place to show just how fabulous it can be when we experience different things. Have you played Deweke, a game from Botswana? Eaten Mexican Tacos? What about learning to throw Chinese Ribbons? Well, if you said no to any of those, then we have a treat in store for you! And don’t forget to have a look in your children’s school bags this week – the RAFFLE tickets have been sent home. Hand the stubs (with your name and phone number on them) and the money, in the envelope provided, to the office by the 1st July. We’ll draw the raffle on the day of the carnival. Read more here
