Kilmorie Primary School Newsletter - 23rd January 2026

Friday 23rd January 2026

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you’ve had a good week. It has certainly been a busy one here, with Parents’ Evening appointments, educational visits, and plenty of learning taking place. In Monday’s assembly, we focused on Holocaust Memorial Day (marked on 27th January). I spoke about the key themes of the Holocaust and the importance of remembering this event—especially as the number of survivors continues to decline. I also acknowledged, sadly, that other genocides have occurred in the 80 years since.

On Tuesday, I showed the children some of the resources that we received for OPAL.  Next week we will introduce these materials into the playground.  We will continue to add resources later this term.

Earlier in the week, Year 3 went back in time to the Stone Age with a workshop in Beckenham Place Park.  Year 1 visited Wild Cat Wilderness.  Year 2 had an Art Workshop today.  A busy learning week.

On Monday, Kilmorie was present at the event in New Cross to mark the New Cross Fire, an important but tragic part of local history, affecting the Kilmorie Community - one of our members of staff lost a relative in the fire.

Here is an excerpt from the Director of Education’s bulletin,  “On Monday 19 January, schools came together to mark the 45th anniversary of the New Cross Fire. The event took place at the site of the fire, 439 New Cross Road and then moved to the memorial in Fordham Park. We remembered the 14 Lewisham young people who tragically lost their lives. Thank you to the following schools who attended: Addey & Stanhope Secondary School, Athelney Primary School, Childeric Primary School, Edmund Waller Primary School, Elfrida Primary School, Grinling Gibbons Primary School, Grinling Gardens Primary School, Kender Primary, Kilmorie Primary School, Oak Gardens Primary School, St James Hatcham CE Primary School, St Winifred’s Catholic Primary School, Twin Oaks Primary School. We were joined by survivors and friend and family of the victims and Cllr. Edison Huynh, Lewisham’s Lead member for Children and Young People. It was a poignant and moving event. Thank you also to Dean Gordon and the Phoenix Federation who organised the event, attendance at which has grown over the years. It would be wonderful to see even more schools attending next year.

Rebecca – London Winter Walk

I am walking a marathon on Saturday in the London Winter Walk on behalf of Cancer Research. 2025 was a particularly difficult year for my family with multiple members being diagnosed so I thought I’d take control and take on a challenge. Any donation made would be hugely appreciated by Cancer Research, follow the link to donate. Thank you so much!
