Kilmorie Primary School Newsletter - 13th March 2026

Friday 13th March 2026

This week has been full of energy, curiosity, and celebration across the school. In Monday’s assembly, we marked International Women’s Day, and I was delighted to share with the children a short introduction to the history and purpose behind this important global event. We reflected on the achievements of women throughout history and the ongoing importance of equality and empowerment.

On Tuesday, our focus shifted to the exciting new lunchtime activities now available to the children. The sand pit has already become a popular spot, sparking imaginative play and plenty of enthusiastic digging! It was wonderful to see children trying new things and engaging with space in creative ways.

To build on all the brilliant work from World Book Day last week, I also had the pleasure of reading the first few chapters of The Twits. The children were captivated by Roald Dahl’s humour and the wonderfully mischievous characters—perfect for keeping the joy of reading alive beyond the day itself.

Looking ahead, next week we will be celebrating Neurodiversity, exploring the many different ways our brains work and the strengths that diversity brings to our school community. It promises to be a thoughtful and inspiring week.

Next week, on Friday 20th March, is Red Nose Day and, as we are a Rights Respecting School, we would like to raise awareness for charities which are responsible for improving the welfare and life-chances of children.  We are asking children and staff to wear an item of red clothing on the day to raise further awareness of children's rights and needs and the Comic Relief campaign.  Each person who wears a red item can also make a contribution of £1 to go towards the Comic Relief fun.  Thank you for your support.

Opal Play - Merritts Brook E-ACT Primary Academy

I would like to thank you for the support that you have given us as we develop our OPAL work.  It has been great to see the children interacting with the different activities we have started to provide.   This week we opened the sand pit and it has been great to see the children enjoying it.

As the weather improves we would like to expand our offer by adding water play to lunch times.  If you have any old plastic water jugs, clean hoses (not too long), any lengths of unused guttering and unwanted baby baths, we would be grateful for any contributions.

Devonshire Nature Reserve

Year 3 had a wonderful time on their trip to Devonshire Nature Reserve. The children explored aquatic plants and pond life, observing different plants growing in and under the water and learning how they survive in the pond environment. They also enjoyed a woodland walk where they practiced tree identification and discovered a range of medicinal plants.

One highlight of the day was identifying and tasting wild garlic, which many children were excited to try. The pupils also took part in hands-on activities including grinding wheat and creating their own clay hedgehogs. It was a fantastic afternoon of outdoor learning and exploration that everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

Kilmorie Mini London Marathon Ballot opens (Today / Monday)

In just over a month, on Saturday 25 April, over 20,000 primary school children will take part in the Mini London Marathon. We're so excited that for the first year ever Kilmorie will be there, as our school has been awarded 25 places to take part in this 1-mile event. So if your child would like to be there as part of Team Kilmorie, look out for the email with all the info you need about the event and a link to register for the ballot.

                                    Good luck!!

A big thanks to all those who came on March 1st, the photo shows the gardening crew, who gave the school gardens a lovely spring clean; we weeded, pruned and mulched.  It has been an exciting week for insects at the school, firstly we saw a Rose Chafer, a beautiful green beetle which we have seen before in the gardens.  Then we had our first ever sighting of a Hummingbird Hawk-Moth in the Wild Garden, feeding off the flowers of one of our early flowering shrubs, a very exciting event as this is not a common moth. It was spotted during a class forest school session so we will keep our eyes peeled in case it returns.  Look out for the school red tulips in the Physic Garden which should be flowering soon.
