Kilmorie Primary School Newsletter - 19th June 2026

Friday 19th June 2026

This week has been a powerful and thought-provoking one at Kilmorie, centred around Refugee Week and its theme of welcome, belonging and community.

In my assembly, I shared the stories and achievements of several famous refugees whose resilience, determination and contributions have helped to shape the world around us. It was an opportunity to reflect on the strengths that people bring with them, even after experiencing great hardship and displacement. This important theme was also explored in Kate's assembly on Tuesday, helping our children to deepen their understanding of the experiences of refugees and the importance of empathy, kindness and inclusion.

I thoroughly enjoyed Sarah’s Cs class assembly on the Anansi stories.  I have learn not to be afraid of Spiders.  The children, dance, sang, and acted well in the heat of the hall.  Well done!

On Thursday, following our wonderful afternoon of play as we celebrated Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child – the right to rest, relax and play – the entire school came together for a silent walk around the school site. This was a moving opportunity for pupils and staff to reflect on the plight of refugees around the world today and to consider how fortunate we are, while thinking about those who have been forced to leave their homes in search of safety.

We ended Thursday on a high note with a fantastic performance from our school band. Their wonderful songs brought the school community together and showcased the remarkable musical talent we have at Kilmorie. We may well have some future pop and rock stars in the making!

It has also been a slightly different week for me. Yesterday, with the kind support of a couple of parents, I took part in a taster session for a potential new catering provider for next year. I would like to thank those parents for giving up their time to help with this important process. Once a decision has been made, I will, of course, keep you fully informed.

It is wonderful that the warm weather has returned but can children not bring in handheld, battery powered fans as they do cause a distraction in class.  We look to ensure that the classes are well ventilated at all times.

As we approach the weekend, I wish all of our families a restful and enjoyable few days ahead. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

On Monday, Jo's Year 4 class went to the Horniman Museum!

They took part in a workshop about Classification of Living Things to consolidate their Science learning.  The workshop was very interesting, and really made everyone think about how living things can be grouped effectively to help us to understand them better.  We also really enjoyed going to the aquarium and saw some of the brilliant new parts that have been developed at the Horniman.  A good time was had by all!

Year 5 had great fun on Monday!

In DT they have been learning about the frames that are required to support different structures. On Monday they had a workshop in the playground. They learnt about the power of the triangle to create strong structures. They then worked in teams to create the most impressive structure that they could from bamboo canes. The children collaborated well thinking about their designs and then making alterations when things didn't work. They built some incredibly impressive structures. Many of the children commented, it was one of the most fun activities that they have done in Year 5!

Opal Play - Merritts Brook E-ACT Primary Academy

We are looking to develop our OPAL Provision with some water play over the next few weeks.  If you have any old but clean, jugs, small buckets, water containers etc we would be grateful for the donations.  If you have any lengths of unused guttering, it would be greatly appreciated.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award | UNICEF UK

It has been a busy month for events linked to UNCRC Articles.  Last week for International Week we looked again at Articles 7 (name & nationality), 8 (identity), 2 (non-discrimination) and 30 (minority culture, language and religion).  Yesterday we celebrated International Day of Play and the children enjoyed Article 31 - the right to play – with an afternoon of outside play.

Thank you to all the children who helped make the afternoon a success – the playground buddies, opal play officers, wellbeing pupil parliament members and rights respecting steering group members.  We ended the afternoon with a silent walk around the playground to pause and reflect on the experiences that refugees face in our community and around the world and to raise awareness of Articles 10 and 22 for Refugee Week.  The children have written messages of hope, welcome and solidarity to hang from our Tree of Hope in the playground and to show refugees in our community that we are there for them.

Please remember to check the lost property, the majority of it is in the old Peaceful Pod in the playground (pre half term).  Any items left over after the 3rd July will be donated to the Sankofa Women & Children CIC

Fiddle toys

We have noticed that lots of children are bringing in fiddle toys from home including those filled with gel.  If you feel your child needs a fidget toy please discuss it with the class teacher.

Gel filled fidgets are not allowed.

Supporting Education Through Sankofa Women & Children CIC

Sankofa Women & Children CIC is a community interest company dedicated to improving the lives of women, children and families through education, wellbeing and community support initiatives in both the UK and Ghana.

Inspired by the Ghanaian principle of Sankofa — meaning “go back and fetch it” — we believe that by learning from the past, we can create brighter opportunities for future generations.

As part of our commitment to supporting education, we are currently collecting school supplies and books for children in Ghana. Access to basic learning resources can have a lasting impact on a child’s educational journey, helping them to learn, grow and reach their full potential.

We would be grateful for donations of:

  • Pens

  • Pencils

  • Colouring pencils

  • Notebooks

  • A4 paper
