image of headteacherDear Parents and Carers,

Welcome Back!

I hope you all had a lovely half term break and feel ready for the final, and one of the busiest, parts of this year.

This week’s Whole School Senior Leader assembly was led by Kate G. The main theme was collaboration (one of our Kilmorie Qualities). They watched a video of the Honda advert and discussed the collaboration needed to have created the advert. Did you know it took 4 months and 606 takes to get it right? Kate then celebrated World Environment Day, which was held in Côte d'Ivoire this year. The theme is solutions to the plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution.

Shipra's class assemblyToday we had a wonderful class assembly from Shipra’s class. Which built upon the Senior leader’s assembly as they looked at how we can be more sustainable in line with their topic of sustainability. The focus was around Scandinavian countries, who have taken and implemented exemplary steps in this direction. They then looked at what we can do to reduce plastic pollution; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. They delivered the messages with confidence and clearly enjoyed themselves in the process – well done Shipra’s class what a great start to this term’s class assemblies. More photos here.

This week we have had two school Educational Visits:

  • To support their learning about tropical rainforests, Sarah C’s year 2 class visited the Horniman Museum and participated in a workshop; ‘Animals and their Habitats’. The children also explored the grounds and looked at some of the tropical plants that grow there. See photos here. Below are some quotes from the children:

“My favourite bit was when we went to the workshop and saw animals that were once alive but now are stuffed.” Amelia

“My favourite bit was talking about the environment at the workshop.” Sasha

“My favourite bit was when we had to look at the flowers.” Kayden

  • Year 4 visited to the Unicorn Theatre to see the production of the Invisible Man and believe it or not they even turned invisible themselves! Some of the children were lucky enough to be involved in the show and go on stage. They had a brilliant day and then enjoyed having lunch together in the park. See the photos here.

This week has been a week of cricket at The Oval and with our cricket teams. The year 5 girls represented Lewisham at the London Youth Games on Thursday. It was a fabulous day filled with sunshine, great sporting attitudes and some real skill. The girls did both us and Lewisham proud as their confidence and skills grew with each game they played. Today children from across Year 4 participated in a cricket festival at Mayow Park organised by Platform Cricket, who have previously been in to work across all the classes. We are yet to know the result as they are playing while the newsletter is going to press! I am sure they will have had a wonderful time, whatever the results.

Class photographs started today and what a wonderful day it has been, the sun was shining giving everyone big smiles. David, the photographer will be back on Monday to photograph the remaining classes, let’s hope we have another lovely day.  Sarah C's class will be photographed on Monday (12th).

This morning, Educational Psychologist Daniel Acheampong ran a coffee morning. He provided parents and carers with an overview of the Educational Psychologist role and spoke about the SEN graduated approach. He took feedback from parents and carers to identify what support he can provide in future workshops, which will take place on 16th and 30th June.

Wear Yellow Day: in the UK, there are over 5,000 young people in school living with cystic fibrosis (CF), a life-limiting condition. There is no cure. We will be joining other schools across England supporting Cystic Fibrosis Trust next Friday, the 16th June by holding a Wear Yellow Day fundraising event and helping the Cystic Fibrosis Trust to raise money for a brighter future where everyone born with CF can live a life without limits. A ParentPay option will be available, next week, to donate for this worthwhile charity. All we ask is that the children wear something, however big or small, which is yellow!

Image of monkey barsMonkey bars: Further to a review of the monkey bars we have put clear guidelines in place for their use. These have been shared with staff and children and will be displayed on the monkey bars too:

  • The monkey bars are for children in years 3 to 6
  • The monkey bars can only be used when there is an adult supervising
  • Only one child can cross the monkey bars at a time
  • No one should stand or pass under the monkey bars when someone is on them
  • To use the monkey bars, you can only go forwards, and you move by hanging only (no standing on top, no hanging upside-down, or playing games to try to knock others off the bars)
  • The monkey bars will not be in use when it has been raining
  • No playground equipment, including the monkey bars can be used outside of school time (before and after school), unless you are part of WRAP and they have agreed
  • They will be out of use for a short time whilst reception and year 1 line up

Reminders:

  • A reminder that parents and carers are not allowed to smoke or vape on school premises, I would also like to kindly ask that this is also not done near the school, especially at pick up time. Thank you for your support.
  • Sports day: As per the letter sent and to remind, we are holding this year's sports day at Catford Cyphers, all parents/carers are welcome. If you would like to, you can take your child home at end of day, but don’t forget to sign them out with the class teacher. Please only drive to the venue if you have mobility issues as there is no space at the venue and spaces are limited in the surrounding roads.
  • Don’t forget the last day of the summer term ends at 2pm and there is no WRAP.
  • Reception to Year 6 Open Parents Evening – 6th July 4-6pm. More details will follow.

Lion King helpers – at the end of term we sent an email asking for parent helpers – and we need a lot more please. If you are able to help please complete this form. Look out for more Lion King information next week.

Wishing you a lovely and sunny weekend

Kind regards

Julie

Wellbeing & Safeguarding

Helping young children in difficult situations to seek support has always been hard. Their minds are often not developed enough to understand bad situations. They are also unable to comprehend what they need to do to get out of them. More often than not their limited vocabulary will also reduce their ability to talk to adults effectively. ChildNet has released a downloadable story over on their site, aimed at children aged three and up. Their objective is to make them aware of how to seek help. Please follow this link to find simplified resources around the story as well as the story itself.

Use of mobile phones in school. To support our children, we kindly ask that parents refrain from being on their phones when collecting their child/ren. It is important your child feels your presence when they are collected and can converse with you about their day. It supports closure and enables the ever so important connection bridging school and home.
