Friday 3rd March 2023

image of headteacherDear Parents and Carers,

This week’s Senior Leader assembly was our Kilmorie Quality Cups Assembly where teachers nominate children from their classes to win each of the Kilmorie Quality Cups. A panel of senior leaders then select winners from the nominations. Each time we do this, it is always so hard as there are so many deserving winners. It is also a time that helps to remind us (not that we need much reminding) of all of the fantastic qualities our children here at Kilmorie hold. Please see below (Kilmorie Quality Cups box) for the winners, you can also view all the children who were nominated. Well done to you all.

Staffing changes: Kate’s secondment at Eliot Bank has come to an end. She has done a wonderful job at managing to be in two places and I know she was most appreciated for her work at Eliot Bank, but it is great she is back. We are also about to welcome Sarah N back from maternity leave. She will predominantly be working in years 5 & 6 which we are most excited about. Sadly, we will be saying goodbye next week to Susannah who has been working as a 1:1 support. She is about to embark on a career with MIND charity. This is a fantastic opportunity for her, and I am sure you will join me in wishing her all the best with her new venture.

Fruit and veg at school: you may have heard in the news that there is difficulty sourcing some fruit and vegetables. Chartwells have reassured us that they have a reliable supply chain, but will of course keep you up to date if anything changes.

Sickness bug: Some of you may be more aware than others that we currently have a sickness bug making its way around the school. We really need to try and stop it in its tracks and ask that you remind your child(ren) of the importance of good hand hygiene.

Parents evening: I hope you all found parents evening useful. I saw a number of you enjoying looking through the learning your child has participated in, with some having your child proudly explaining it to you too! These feedback evenings are an important way for us to share key information. However, we are also eager to understand how we can do things better. If you didn’t receive a questionnaire following your parent-teacher meeting please complete it online here. Thank you

Next week is Science Week at Kilmorie, and we will be celebrating this through a variety of activities across the school including an exciting science show, a carousel of investigations in each year group and a look at diversity in science linking to International Women’s Day on 8th March. The theme of this year’s British Science Week is ‘Connections’. If children would like to design a poster about any ‘Connections’ that appear in the world of science, we will send off our winning 5 to enter a UK-wide poster competition. Posters should be A4 or A3 size and need to be completed at home and brought in to school by Friday 17th March. Why not think about connections between animals, connections in construction, or even someone the children have connected with to inspire or help them?

World Book Day: Don’t forget next Friday is World Book Day at Kilmorie, and we are inviting children who would like to dress up, to come to school in either their pyjamas signifying a time to read or as their favourite book character. Do keep sending the photos of your child reading in a funny / silly / adventurous place. Click here if you wish to sign up to the special themed lunch - this form closes Sunday 5th March.

Smart Watches: Children are coming to school with smart watches on, which are distracting learning. For this reason, they are not allowed in school. If your child has a smart watch, please ensure it is left at home. Any children wearing a smart watch will have it confiscated by their teacher and it will only be returned to the parent.

Cherry trees: You may have noticed that we have two new trees in ourphoto of team with the cherry trees playground, these are the ones that those of you who came to the big dig, prepared for. They need a lot of TLC to ensure they embed well, but I look forward to seeing them grow and bursting forth with colour. Thank you to Eva and Olly for organising this.

Strike Day: I am seeing a number of photos of different members of the public and parents joining the teachers strike yesterday, which I know from my staff was much appreciated. Do please note the proposed two days coming up later in March (15th & 16th March). I will write and confirm arrangements next week.

Whilst there is a nip in the air (and I hear rumours of snow next week?) the days are getting brighter and longer making us all feel that spring is (hopefully) just around the corner.

Wishing all our families a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Julie

Year 6 Basketball - Well done!

photo of Year 6 Basketball teamSome of our Year 6 children joined in the Lewisham's school games basketball tournament on Tuesday 28th Feb).

The tournament consisted of 16 teams who were competing to represent Lewisham in the London Youth Games.

Our children did amazingly well and won 4 out of their 7 matches scoring a total of 19 baskets, which meant we had the chance to compete for the final place. The children then went on to play another 7 matches and won 2 and drew one - scoring 12 baskets. This meant that Kilmorie came 7th overall out of 16 teams!

The children showed determination, confidence, resilience and strength throughout. It was a very tough tournament, but they never let their heads go down once, they just carried on until the final whistle.

I (Jane C) am so proud of the way the children played and the sportsmanship they showed throughout every single game by shaking hands and giving praise to other schools, this was even seen and commented by other coaches!

A big well done to each and every child that took part in such a great event!

School News - competition time

All drawings should be handed into the school office by Wednesday 22nd March - alternatively, your child can take them into the branch of Winkworth in Forest Hill by the same date in return for a chocolate egg! There will be an Early, Lower and Upper phase winner, who will all receive a £20 One4all gift card and have their artwork on display in the Winkworth window over Easter. Good luck!

Thank you to parents who have volunteered to help at the discos. We have enough volunteers for the Y3-4 disco, but need a couple more parents to do simple face paint and tattoos at the Y5-6 disco from 6.30-8pm. Please email friendsofkilmorie@hotmail.co.uk if you can help. Disco tickets are still on sale here.

Wellbeing & Safeguarding

Did you know that you can set parental controls on Nintendo Switch?  The app is free and enables you to monitor what your child is playing from your phone, limit how long they are on there, restrict contact with others and more.
