Thursday 28th March 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

Well, here we are at the end of an incredibly busy term.

This week has been a full one with it starting on Monday with all classes from Years 1 to 6 gathered together over Teams for our termly Kilmorie Quality Cups Awards. Children from every class had been nominated by their teachers for each of our eight Kilmorie Child Qualities and we celebrated all these nominees as well as the eight winners. It was lovely to see the classes supporting each other and celebrating the success of their classmates when the cups were awarded. A full list of the nominees can be seen at the end of the newsletter. Here are the winners:

St GeorgesOn Monday we also had Year 2 visiting St George’s Church on Vancouver Road. Rev’d Richard Lane talked with the children about why Christians celebrate Easter. The children had an opportunity to ask questions helping them understand the Christian faith. It was a great trip, supporting their RE work around Christianity. It helped them to understand how the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection emphasises the idea that Jesus is special for Christians and how the Easter symbols help to understand the meaning of Easter for Christians.

The church is holding the following events which may be of interest to you:

Friday 29th March – Children's Workshop - 9.30-11.30

Sunday 31st March – Family Communion with chocolate – 10.00

Throughout the week we have had an array of lovely music ensembles. We have had two guitar ensembles, the Year 5 steel pan groups, violin, drum fun, recorders, ukulele and woodwind. Whilst sadly, I was only able to attend Monday's performance, I have heard them, and they were all amazing. Whilst we definitely have very musical children in the school who have decided which instrument they would like to play, other children have the opportunity to try out instruments to find the one that works for them alongside the huge range of talented teachers we have. We are all so proud of our children and their progress.  Thank you to the children for performing and to the instrumental tutors for their great work and dedication.

 Dance performances

Every Friday afternoon of the Spring term, the Year 5’s in Jana’s class have been learning street dance with their dance teacher, Antoinette. Today they performed to their parents and carers the main dance routine they have been learning. Every single student worked very hard to learn the routine, as well as making up their own choreography in small groups. It was so lovely to see such creativity.

The Year 5’s looked forward to their street dance lesson every single week as dancing around on a Friday afternoon has been a perfect end to their week!

Other year groups also did fantastic performances to parents which gave opportunities to develop their performance skills.

Thank you Antoinette for making the lessons so much fun.

Nursery Applications: It is great that we have had a huge amount of interest and have already allocated all of our 30 hour spaces for our September 2024 and January 2025 Nursery starters. However, we do have some 15 hour spaces available, over 5 days. If your child is eligible (a September start is for children who have turned three before August 31st 2024 and a January start is for children who will turn three before December 31st 2024) or you know of any children in the community who may be interested in applying, please encourage them to do so without delay. For key information, and to apply for a place, you can do this via our school website by clicking on this link:

Lunch wrist bands / special dietary requirements:

To safeguard children, we have agreed with Chartwells that at lunch times children with dietary and allergy needs will be given a coloured wristband.

Green = Vegetarian/dietary needs

Orange = Allergies

If your child has any allergies, Chartwells will require proof of medical evidence of the allergy, and you will need to complete the Medical Diet Parent Menu Approval Form located on our website and return to the school office.

Congratulations A massive congratulations to Will (Tigers' class teacher) on the birth of his little girl, Ronnie who arrived yesterday.

What a wet and soggy end to the term, let’s hope we get some good weather over the holidays. To those celebrating Easter, I wish you a Happy Easter. To all those observing Ramadan, I wish you a peaceful and joyous end to Ramadan and Eid Mubarak when it arrives.

Don’t forget the clocks go forward this weekend! I look forward to welcoming you all back Monday 15th April.

Julie

Year 2 - Thomas For always setting a great example and showing such a good sense of fairness.
Year 2 - Neriah For her resilience in her DT work.
Year 2 - Eric  For working really hard in class. I have been especially impressed with his sewing, when he found it hard didn't give up but kept on trying. He also made an amazing egg protector bag.
Year 2 - Oviya  For being an amazing learner. Oviya keeps on trying, even when she finds something hard. She found sewing tricky to begin with but didn't give up and made an amazing egg protector bag.
Year 3 - Bella  For being so resilient with her Maths. She has worked so hard on converting units of measurements to begin adding and subtracting lengths and explaining her thinking which can be a little tricky.
Year 3 - Shannan  For working super hard in English when writing her non-chronological report on the Stone Age. She was able to research and take notes independently and use those notes to make some really good fact sentences about the Stone Age.
Year 3 - Alana  For her fantastic work ethic. She is always ready to learn, she listens well and constantly thinks about how to make her work the best it can be.
Year 3 - Millie For always doing her best, taking on board feedback and making excellent contributions during class discussions.  She has produced an excellent non--chronological report in which she has ensured she has included all the required features.

We have submitted the results of our Big Plastic Count to help the fight against plastic waste.  Thank you to all the classes and households who took part.  Next month The Big Plastic Count will reveal the national results and provide the evidence needed to push for change.

 Please note the information below is only the footprint for 10 classes and 95 households.  The plastic that generated the most waste was the ‘snack bags, packets and wrappers’ category.  Something for us all to be mindful of when we are buying products.

No Parking It has been brought to our attention that a number of parents / carers are parking / double parking along the yellow lines around the junction of Vancouver Road and Kilmorie Road.  The purpose of School Streets is to make walking to school safer.  However, due to these issues with parking, parents feel that it is now more dangerous for children and families to cross the road.  Please park responsibly, obeying the parking restrictions in order to keep our families safe.

Community News

The Easter holidays will see the return of the popular and free Holiday Activities and Food Programme for eligible children in the borough. As before, there’s a fantastic variety of free activities for children aged 4-16 who receive free school meals. There are also places available for children whose parents and carers are experiencing hardship, but who don’t already qualify for free school meals.

From budding sportspeople to talented crafters, there’s something for everyone. Children get free and nutritious food when they attend too. Places need to be booked and can get snapped up quickly, so do encourage parents and carers to visit Lewisham Council’s Holiday Activities and Food Programme webpage for the full list of activities and booking information.
