Julie

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back!

I hope you all had a lovely holiday and managed to enjoy the bits of nice weather we had.

On Tuesday, Dennis led our whole school assembly. His focus was on Autism Awareness Day, asking the question whether the day should be autism awareness or acceptance. He highlighted some of the issues that people on the autistic spectrum face. He shared some famous people in history and people of today, who had / have ASC, the difficulties they faced but also the many strengths that they possess(ed). He looked in more depth at the example of the artist Stephen Wiltshire.  This topic was introduced in Early Phase assembly through the story 'The Go Away Bird' by Julie Donaldson.

The term has begun with lots of school enrichment visits to support of new topics this week. Two year groups went to Dulwich Picture Gallery, another to the Horniman museum and one to Deptford Creekside with more planned for next week! Do please have a read of the children’s accounts, quotes and pictures in school news. Educational visits are such an important part of making learning come to life and it lovely to hear how much they get from them.

Using the right email addresses:

The different members of staff in the office hold different responsibilities, which means different @mailboxes are managed by different people. Due to emails going to the wrong/multiple mailboxes delays in picking up messages are being created and adding additional administrative hours to the team.

Please can I ask that you make sure you use the dedicated email for your query and that you don’t send it to multiple mailboxes. Thank you for your support in helping us to create clear lines of communication that are dealt with in a timely manner.

We are starting an exciting project, and we need your help?

A big thank you to Clare Connor who put together our application for the 'Our Space Award' from Groundwork London who want to clean and green the city.  We have been given a grant to plant along the fence on Kilmorie Road, which we are calling ‘the Living Boundaries Project’.  Further to the fence art project not being able to go ahead, we can start this project. We need children and parents/carers to help out with the planting and Eva will be having Gardening Days over the coming months. Please look out for these and come along.  Our gardens have been created and enhanced by parents/carers and children for over 30 years. Do please come along and add to that history by helping to improve the children's learning and play environment.

Anyone have a microwave they would be happy to donate to the school?

A number of our microwaves have come to the end of their lives. Does anyone have a microwave that they no longer use/need that you would be happy to donate? It must be in full working order and free from any internal rust to pass the H&S guide and be safe to use in school.

Wednesday was National Haiku Poetry Day and to celebrate I have found one to celebrate the classic spring weather we have had this week:

rain drops hit still pond
surface ripples spread outward
tickling frog bellies

Let’s hope we get some dry weather over the weekend, and I look forward to welcoming you all back on Monday.

Kind regards

Julie

School News

Garden News:

"We are having a lovely spring here in the Kilmorie Gardens, we have had daffodils, tulips, forget-me-nots, hyacinths and now the wallflowers and irises are Tulipsstarting to appear. During gardening lessons, we have been looking at the variety of plants we have growing and the range of insects we are finding all over the gardens.  In the vegetable beds Year 4 are growing broad beans. They planted the seeds in the autumn and are going to eat the beans straight from the plants in the coming weeks.

The children have also been finding an amazing range of animals in gardening lessons, forest school sessions and at playtime.  Recently, at lunchtime Year 2 children unearthed a stag beetle larva and after discussing its amazing lifecycle, (it lives underground in rotten wood for up to 6 years and then becomes an adult for only 4 months), we placed the larva in our special stag beetle area by the Wild Garden. Also in a gardening lesson, we found a centipede and for the first time, saw a millipede along with the usual woodlice, worms, slugs and spiders.

Over the Easter Holiday Freddie (year 4) and Edie (year 6) had a cake sale to raise funds for the Kilmorie Gardens. We really appreciate their effort and kindness to think of the school and will enjoy buying some summer bedding with the money.

Educational Visits:

This week, Conor's class went to Creekside Discovery Centre to explore their 'Rivers' topic in a practical setting. They explored objects that have been found in the river and discovered which industry they were linked to from the past. They also walked through the river with their 'stylish' waders and jackets, identifying the features of rivers and finding a variety of wildlife! They even got to hold some crabs!

Year 3 - The children took part in an artist-led workshop focusing on the painting ‘The Return of the Holy Family from Egypt’ by French painter Nicholas Poussin. The children observed the painting and had an enquiry-based dialogue and conversation about what they thought the painting depicted. We learnt about the colour blue that was used to represent important individuals in paintings and how it was mined from Afghanistan and that the colour yellow was made from cows' urine and clay. They had a chance at focusing on a particular part of the painting and trying to imitate that part using difficult artistic techniques. We looked at different shades of colours used, drawing with our less dominant hand and a printing technique. To view photos from the school trip please click here.

Bella- It was fun and I really enjoyed drawing my eye and using the printing method.

Joe- I enjoyed the activity where I had to use my less dominant hand and draw without looking at what I was drawing.

Year 2 - visited the Horniman Museum to launch their learning on the topic of Kenya. Our workshop took us to two different countries in Africa where we found out more about Kenya and Ghana. To view photos please click here.

Ellie: We learnt about the clothing used to celebrate parties. Everyone wears white except for the person being celebrated. They wear Kente cloth.

Dash: People saw a spider spinning a web and made the Kente cloth to look like spiders in the rainforest.

Year 1 - went to Dulwich picture gallery.  We took the 185 bus and had a lovely walk through Dulwich park. They took part in an artist-led workshops. The pupils were supported to experiment with a variety of materials, processes and skills while continuing to consider the workshop theme; impossible paintings.
