image of headteacherDear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back!

I do hope you all had a good holiday and feel ready for the term ahead. It was so lovely seeing so many of the children run or skip into school with big beaming smiles.

I led this week’s assembly with a focus around the date April the 22nd as it is an important date for two different reasons: it is Earth Day & Stephen Lawrence Day. We first looked at who Stephen Lawrence was, what happened to him, what followed after his death and the impact of his death today. We then looked at Earth Day, which has been celebrated since 1970 and whilst it is over 50 years old, there are still many threats and problems that face our world today. We brainstormed what they were: water pollution, deforestation, pollution and climate change, which is quite an overwhelming list. We agreed that sometimes it can feel that the problems facing our planet are so big that there is very little that we as individuals can do. We then heard examples of how by doing small things they add up to helping to make big changes such as Ella and Caitlin’s campaign to stop plastic toys being given in fast food restaurants. We then brainstormed things we could do here at Kilmorie.

photo of children at SPINE Poetry FestivalA group of Year 6 children visited Catford Library on Wednesday as part of the SPINE Poetry Festival 2023. They took part in a poetry and movement workshop with the artists Elsabet Yonas and Jasmin Thein. Elsa and Jasmin, as well as the library staff, were very impressed with how brave our children were with their participation and their willingness to share their words – and their wonderful behaviour of course! Photos available on our website.

The Website’s Class Pages are having a revamp. We are trying to create a place where it is easy for you to find key information about your child’s journey within the year they are in a snapshot of the year, termly curriculum coverage.

We will be having some new playground equipment fitted, work will start on 2nd May for two weeks. Creative Play (the company doing the works) will be adding new climbing apparatus and a brand-new number square. This does mean that the concrete part of the playground will be cordoned off and therefore, for the two weeks, there will be changes to drop off and pick up points. For the year groups affected, l will share the temporary changes with you next week

King’s Coronation theme lunch imageWe are having a Themed lunch for the King’s Coronation. It will be on Thursday 4th May and weather permitting, outside. You can view the menu here. If your child normally has packed lunch, but you would like to sign up for this themed lunch please click here. We need you to do this before 9am on Friday 28th April so that Chartwells has enough time to order the food in.

Mental Health Awareness Week logoThis year's Mental Health Awareness Week is between the 15th and 21st May 2023 and the theme is anxiety.  At Kilmorie we will be having a 'Wear it Green Day' Fundraiser event on Thursday (18th May) in order to raise awareness and funds for the Mental Health Foundation.  More information will follow in next week's newsletter.

As you are aware the NEU have called two industrial action days close together – Thursday 27th April and Tuesday 2nd May. A letter was sent this week outlining details, if you have missed it, please click here.

Dates for your diary - Sports day: Y1 – Y6 on Wednesday 14th June at Catford Cyphers and Reception on Thursday 15th June at school. More information will follow.

Early Phase Garden Party – Sat 13th May, 11.30-14.30

With only 3 weeks to go, we are appealing to the school community to get behind the Early Phase Garden Party and support it if they can – by donating, volunteering or both!

Last year, many Early Phase families told us it was the highlight of the school calendar for them. This year, it's even more important that parents support the event, as the money raised will go towards supplementing the costs of the coaches for the beach trip to Joss Bay for all Nursery, Reception and Year 1 children in July. Since this trip last took place in 2019, the cost of coaches has risen hugely - and many London schools have had to abandon similar trips due to them now being prohibitively expensive.

For an inner city primary school like Kilmorie, the trip really matters. Not just because it is a lovely day out, which will create lasting memories for everyone, but because some Kilmorie children will have never experienced the joy of a day at the beach before. So please have a look for items to donate or sign up to give an hour of your time on a stall during the party (you’ll still have 2 hours to have fun!).

We also need lots more of the following donation items please:

  • soft toys
  • good quality unwanted gift items, bottles of wine, etc. for the tombola
  • children’s books
  • new coloured items for the class rainbow hampers:
