image of headteacherDear Parents and Carers,

The Kilmorie quality in this week's assemblies was Diversity. Dennis, with the children's help, highlighted the benefits of living and working in a diverse community. Diversity gives us the opportunity to learn new information, try new foods, meet new friends, open our minds to new ideas and have different experiences.  The assembly concluded, as it was Martin Luther King Day, with a look at Martin Luther King and his work, supporting everyone to see the importance of having a better understanding of diversity.

Receiving school communications: It has come to our attention that some of you are not receiving key information. This is due to how our school MIS system stores information. However, there is a way around this and if you would like to receive all email communications (letters sent home / newsletter links etc) please can you let the office know, and we will amend the system accordingly. Letters are also available on the website on the letters sent home page.

We have a new dance teacher! Justyna will be joining Kilmorie next week, bringing with her a wealth of experience and exciting ideas. She is replacing Georgina and will be teaching contemporary dance to Years 3 & 4; Antonnette will continue to teach street dance to Years 5 & 6.  I am sure you will join me in welcoming her to Kilmorie and give her a friendly hello when you see her.

Children participating in sportOn Monday (16th January), 18 of our Year 6 children represented Kilmorie in a Mixed Sports Hall Athletics Competition. Jane, who attended the event with the children said upon her return “Our children showed great ability and skill throughout the tournament. I was so impressed with their maturity and determination to do their best. We are so proud of them all.” Read full article.

Spotlight on Kilmorie website – Calendar subscription: I really hope you are enjoying the user experience of our new website. A couple of weeks ago, I highlighted the various email addresses available to help speed up replies and ensure emails are received by the right department.

This week, I would like to showcase the school calendar subscription function. Parents / Carers can subscribe to the calendar for updates for their child/ren’s year group, as well as all school and FOK events. It’s a great tool for busy parents to not miss out on key dates. Please see school news below for further guidance.

We have a new Chair and new Deputy Chair of Friends of Kilmorie: A massive thank you to Becky Wickes and Bex Clancy who have stepped forward as FOK Interim Chair and Interim Deputy Chair until the FOK AGM in September. I'm looking forward to working with them and ask that as a school community we give them our full support.

The school disco this year, will take place on Friday 17th March. For children in Years 3-4 (4.30-6pm) and Years 5-6 (6.30-8pm). It has been decided that due to the complexities of managing allergies and dietary needs, FOK will not be serving pizza and cookies, however drinks and crisps will be available for children to buy. The children love this event, thank you FOK Committee for giving your time to organising it.

Our Children’s safety during drop off and pick up I understand that when dropping a child, you may think that as you are only pulling up for a few minutes, it may not appear to cause a problem. However, Vancouver Road junction with Kilmorie Road is getting extremely congested with cars parked on the double yellow lines with idling engines and then doing 3-point turn to continue their journey. This is making it difficult for children and families to cross, making the area unsafe. Please can I ask that you find a designated space to drop your child. Thank you for your understanding.

Finally, I have some exciting news. Kilmorie has registered to participate in the Royal Academy’s Young Artists’ Summer Show. It is a great opportunity for the gallery to engage creatively with young people (aged 4–19years), offering them the chance to make and share a piece of artwork that truly expresses their own voice. Click here for more information.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Kind regards

Julie

Wellbeing & Safeguarding

The BAFTA-nominated Channel 4 series, The dog house is returning for a new series, described as one of the most heart-warming programmes on TV. Could you provide a loving home for a rescue dog? They are looking for couples, individuals, friends and families who are seriously considering bringing a rescue dog into their lives and are willing to share their reasons for doing so.

In previous series, they found that there were many reasons people might consider bringing a rescue dog into their life; to help combat loneliness, extra company for a child, and to encourage getting out more. For children specifically, having a dog in your home has been proven to help with social skills and impulse control, and even improve self-esteem. Dogs are always happy to see you when you get home from school, and their love is unconditional - the ideal confidant and an ever-willing playmate!

Please see flyer for more information or follow this link to apply.
